Protein is an essential nutrient needed in the everyday diet and can be found in food such as meat, fish, eggs, milk and nuts. It plays a role in the maintenance of muscle mass as well as contributing to the growth of muscle mass. Athletes in particular have an increased need for dietary protein and the recommended protein intake for athletes is 1.2-1.7 g per kg of body weight per day. This protein intake should be consumed in meals spread out throughout the day.

Physical exercise, and in particular power training, results in an increase in protein breakdown and protein synthesis. To reduce protein breakdown from occurring in the aftermath of exercise, it is important that you consume enough protein to stimulate muscle protein synthesis as this is the foundation for muscle growth. Research has shown that consuming 20 g of protein following a workout is enough to stimulate maximal muscle protein synthesis (Phillips S., 2012)1and can therefore contribute to muscle growth.

Whey protein is one of the most complete protein and contains all the essential amino acids. It is digested and absorbed quickly and has a high leucine content.
