Philemon Rono is a lively and enthusiastic athlete training under coach Patrick Sang. After some year on the track he moved to road running. He improved his personal best in every half marathon he ran. In 2013 he surprised everybody by winning the Kenyans cross trials for the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz. Philemon Rono started his marathon career by pacing for his training partners in Berlin and Rotterdam. He was an important pacemaker in the World Record race in Berlin 2013. He won the Obudu Mountain Race in Nigeria in 2013 which has a 13km uphill course.

Although Philemon was fearing the marathon distance, he made his marathon debut in 2014. He did great and finished in third place in Hamburg 2:07:07.
