Getu Feleke is an Ethiopian marathon athlete who started running when he was a child. Living in a small village with his father and brother, he had to run 5km to school every day. After graduating from high school Getu worked as a butcher for three years.
His first podium place in a big marathon was the first place at the Amsterdam Marathon in 2010 where he entered the race as the fourth fastest on paper. He left the competition as the fastest man, slicing over half a minute off Yegon's year-old course record with a run of 2:05:44. He paid thanks to his trainer, former athlete Getaneh Tessema, for his first victory over the distance with a time establishing him as the fifth fastest Ethiopian ever over the marathon. He improved his personal best at the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon where he took the second place in a time of 2:04:50. One year later he returned to this marathon and placed second again.
After making his debut in Vienna in 2009, Getu Feleke decided to return to the Austrian capital in 2014. He ran away from the leading pack at 30k and broke the course record with more than one minute.
