Abera Kuma started his athletics career on the track, which was successful with two fifth places at the World Championships. He represented his country at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu where he became fifth in the 5000m final. At the World Championships in Moscow he became fifth again, but this time in the 10.000m final. In 2012 he made his half marathon debut in Birmingham, where he finished second behind Micah Kogo but ahead of Zersenay Tadese. He won his next half marathon in Egmond, which is a race along the course and through the dunes and he took a podium place in Lisbon half marathon.
Abera Kuma made his first steps into marathon running in Dubai in 2014, he was in the leading group till 36k but couldn’t keep up with them till the finish line. But Abera made a huge jump forward by running 2:05:56 in the fall in Berlin. His training with the strong athletes Tsegaye Kebede and Ayele Abshero really paid off.
His biggest victory so far was at the 2015 Rotterdam marathon where he won in 2:06:47.
